CONSOLIDER-MONTES: global change impacts on forests
The project MONTES started in december 2008. The kick-off meeting took place in Barcelona (UAB) between 12-13 february 2009.
The MONTES program brings together researchers from 9 research groups: two from public centers that conduct research into forestry and environmental issues (CREAF, CTFC), two from the CSIC (EBD, ICTJA), three from Spanish universities (UB, UCLM, UGR), one from CIEMAT and one mixed university-CSIC group (IRN-URJC), making a total of 71 doctors altogether.
The aim of this proposal is to create a competitive platform at national and international level in order to examine the environmental contribution of Spanish woodlands to analyze their relationship with the components of global change, and to identify opportunities to modify these components through appropriate management. The general objective of the program is to determine how to effectively integrate woodland management (including non-management options) into strategies aimed at adapting and mitigating global change.
The program is organized around three main themes: (1) analysis of the influence of global change on the structure and function of woodlands; (2) study of the role of woodlands on the mitigation of global change effects; and (3) modification through management of the effects of global change on woodlands and vice versa. The program is structured around eight work packages. (1) interactions with the atmosphere; (2) changes in carbon fixation; (3) changes in the distribution of species caused by climate change; (4) water availability; (5) consequences of land use change and fragmentation on species; (6) species vulnerability to fire and the preventive management of large-scale fires; (7) biological invasions and consequences to biodiversity.
A fundamental aspect of the program is that it stresses not only mankind’s active role in enhancing global change, but also recognizes mankind’s opportunities to mitigate this change. Other fundamental aspects of this proposal are the international projection of the research team, as well as its cohesion and training capacity.

El projecte MONTES i el canvi global en sistemes forestals
El projecte MONTES (Els sistemes naturals terrestres espanyols i el canvi global: amenaces i oportunitats) va començar oficialment el desembre del 2008.
El veritable tret de sortida, però, el va marcar la reunió conjunta celebrada a la UAB els dies 12 i 13 de febrer.
El passat juliol, la Secretaria d’Estat d’Universitats i Recerca del Govern espanyol va resoldre concedir, a través del programa Consolider-Ingenio 2010, un ajut de quatre milions d’euros al projecte MONTES, Els sistemes naturals terrestres espanyols i el canvi global: amenaces i oportunitats. Coordinat des del CREAF i amb una durada de cinc anys, el projecte té com a principal objectiu estudiar la interacció entre el canvi global i els sistemes naturals terrestres, així com els mecanismes per adaptar-ne la gestió amb vistes a mitigar els efectes d’aquest canvi. En total hi participen 77 investigadors de nou centres de recerca capdavanters de l’Estat espanyol: el CREAF, la Universitat de Barcelona, la Universitat de Castella-la Manxa, la Universitat de Granada, l’Estació Biològica de Doñana (CSIC), l’Institut de Diagnòstic Ambiental i Estudis de l’Aigua (CSIC), l’Institut de Recursos Naturals (CSIC) – Universitat Rey Juan Carlos, el Centre Tecnològic Forestal de Catalunya i el Centre d’Investigacions Energètiques, Ambientals i Tecnològiques (CIEMAT).
A la trobada van assistir-hi més de 70 investigadors d’una desena de centres de recerca, fonamentalment espanyols. Hi estaven representats molts dels grups de recerca més actius en ecologia terrestre del nostre país. Aquesta capacitat de mobilització és per si mateixa un èxit, i una clara mostra del gran interès que suscita MONTES, no només al CTFC sinó també a la resta d’institucions implicades.
